A tour bus carrying more than 30 passengers from Johor became stuck beneath a flyover in Taman Bagan on Saturday night after its driver reportedly followed directions from a navigation app.
The impact left nearly half the bus wedged under the structure, shattering several windows and sending glass fragments scattering across the road.
Two passengers sustained minor injuries from flying glass. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
The driver, who identified himself only as Razali, said he was taking the group to a nearby hotel ahead of their scheduled journey to Kedah today.
He said he had relied on the navigation app, which directed him along a route without taking the flyover’s height restriction into account.
“I heard a loud bang while driving under the flyover. Moments later, the bus’ windows shattered and glass fragments scattered everywhere. I was shocked by what happened,” he said.
Razali said he had travelled to Butterworth several times before, but this was the first time he had followed the app’s directions through the Taman Bagan flyover.
He added that poor lighting and his unfamiliarity with the area had led him to depend entirely on the navigation app.
A check at the scene found that the underpass had a height restriction sign indicating a maximum clearance of 2.6 metres, as well as a warning sign identifying the stretch as accident-prone.
