A man riding an electric wheelchair was killed after being run over by a reversing road roller at a construction site in China.
The fatal incident occurred on October 28 along Jiefang South Road in Qiaotou Town, Qinghai Province, where routine road maintenance work was underway.
The victim, identified by authorities only as Li, had entered the roadworks area through a gap in the safety barriers.
CCTV footage captured the heavy road roller moving across a section of freshly laid asphalt before reversing towards Li.
The vehicle struck the man, crushing him beneath its heavy machinery.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene and attempted to save Li, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The municipal maintenance department confirmed that routine road maintenance work was being carried out when the incident happened.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into whether the construction site had been properly secured and whether the safety officer on duty had fulfilled their responsibilities.
“An investigation team has been established to investigate the closure of the construction site and the performance of duties by the on-site safety officer,” an official statement said.
However, authorities did not disclose Li’s age or reveal the identity of the road roller operator.
The incident comes after a similar fatal accident was reported in August in the village of Tandalija, Gujarat, India.
In that case, a 19-year-old woman died after being run over by a road roller when the scooter she was riding skidded on a wet road.
Two other young women travelling with her escaped with minor injuries after all three fell onto the road.
The 19-year-old was struck by a road roller travelling alongside them and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was also captured on CCTV.
