A 63-year-old man’s life has been turned upside down after developing excruciating skin pain that he says feels like being “torn apart” whenever touched, following a treatment at Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar (HTJ) here in March.
Anual Adnan Ibrahim, from Seremban, said the ordeal began when he was admitted for chest pain after previously undergoing heart surgery in Selangor last year. During treatment, he claimed doctors administered a liquid medication through an IV in his left arm.
“After two bottles were given, I told the doctor and nurses that my body felt hot, my skin was burning and itchy. I begged them to stop, but they refused. Later, they switched the IV to my right arm for the third bottle. On the final day, another doctor came and ordered the treatment stopped, saying it wasn’t even meant for heart problems,” he told reporters.
Anual was discharged the same day, but said he later developed persistent burning and itching sensations, especially on the upper left side of his body. He added that bruises had also appeared on his arm.
Since then, the father of two said he has been unable to wear shirts due to the severe pain caused by fabric brushing against his skin. He now spends most days shirtless at home, sleeps on the bare floor without bedding, and avoids public gatherings and prayers at the mosque.
“From the outside, I look normal, but my skin feels like it’s on fire. My life has become miserable, and my wife and children are also affected. I’ve filed complaints through the Public Complaint Management System (SISPAA) and lodged a police report. I just want answers from the hospital, and compensation for the suffering I’ve gone through,” he said.
Negeri Sembilan Health Director Dr Zuraida Mohamed confirmed receiving a report on the case, stating that investigations would be carried out.
“Normally, a committee will be set up to review the matter, and the patient will be called in. At this stage, I cannot provide further details as we are bound by Health Ministry (KKM) policies. Any official response will come from KKM’s Corporate Communication Unit,” she said.
