Italian Chef’s Refusal To Put Pineapple On Pizza Leads To Dismissal And Failed Legal Bid

Date:

An Italian chef in Australia has failed to challenge his dismissal after repeatedly refusing to serve pineapple on pizzas, arguing that the controversial topping was an insult to his culture.

Davide Tamburella was fired by Brisbane restaurant La Costa in May following several workplace issues, including his refusal to prepare ham and pineapple pizzas for guests attending a private function, the BBC reported.

According to a ruling by Australia’s Fair Work Commission, Tamburella believed he was not obliged to follow management instructions if he considered them offensive to his culture.

The commission noted that the chef viewed pineapple on pizza as “an insult to his culture” as an Italian, adding that the disagreement had occurred several times over the years.

It was reportedly the third time in four years that Tamburella had refused to use pineapple as a pizza topping. He had also previously urged his employer to understand how strongly many Italians felt about the controversial combination.

The irony was not lost on the fact that Queensland, where La Costa is based, is Australia’s leading pineapple-producing state and home to the iconic Big Pineapple tourist attraction on the Sunshine Coast.

However, the commission also heard complaints about Tamburella’s conduct at work, including allegations involving foul language, communication difficulties and growing frustration in the workplace.

Another incident mentioned in the ruling involved the chef fracturing bones in his hand after striking a metal handrail.

Tamburella had hoped to secure his employer’s sponsorship for permanent residency through a skilled-worker visa programme. However, the process was stopped following his dismissal.

His unfair dismissal claim was ultimately unsuccessful because it was lodged after the statutory deadline, preventing the commission from reinstating him.

Restaurant managing director Elliot Ingram later said the dispute involved more than a disagreement over pizza toppings, describing the pineapple issue as just one of several matters raised during disciplinary proceedings.
