A nine-year-old girl died after collapsing inside her classroom shortly after a physical education lesson at Lovely Heritage School in Mayur Vihar Phase 2, New Delhi, on Wednesday.
The Year Three pupil had reportedly just returned to her classroom after taking part in the physical education session when she suddenly fell unconscious.
CCTV footage showed the girl walking up a staircase with several other pupils before entering the classroom. She was seen placing both hands on her waist moments before collapsing.
A teacher immediately rushed to her aid and attempted to provide initial assistance before calling for further help.
School staff subsequently took the girl to a nearby medical centre, but it reportedly did not accept her. She was then rushed to another hospital in Nirman Vihar, where doctors pronounced her dead.
The school informed the family that the girl had suffered a cardiac arrest. However, her relatives questioned how the school handled the emergency, alleging that she was not given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) promptly.
Other CCTV footage showed the class teacher rushing towards the girl after she fell and lifting her onto a chair. However, the pupil remained unconscious.
The girl’s body was sent to hospital for a post-mortem examination, while police seized the school’s CCTV recordings to assist with their investigation.
The exact cause of death has yet to be established pending confirmation through medical examinations.
