Najib’s Langgak Duta Home Quiet As Uncertainty Over House Arrest Continues

Date:

The residence of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, remained quiet on Sunday morning, with no signs of movement in or out of the property.

A check by Utusan Malaysia at 10.40am found no police officers or other authorities stationed around the house, while the surrounding area remained calm.

Media presence was also relatively limited, although several journalists had arrived as early as 9am to monitor the latest developments.

No members of the public or Najib’s supporters were seen gathering outside the residence during the observation.

Earlier on Sunday, the Attorney-General reportedly sought an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the request was intended to seek forgiveness and reaffirm the Attorney-General’s commitment to complying with the King’s decree concerning Najib’s Conditional Pardon Order in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

On Friday, reports confirmed that Najib had settled the RM50 million fine imposed in the SRC International case at the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s Criminal Registry Office.

His special officer, Ahmad Lutfi Azhar, was reportedly at the court at around 11.30am to handle the payment and complete the necessary administrative procedures.

The payment was among the conditions under the Conditional Pardon Order, which would allow Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.

Najib’s residence at No. 11, Jalan Langgak Duta, had also been declared a prison for the purpose of house detention under the Prisons Act 1995.

However, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) announced the following afternoon that implementation of the house arrest arrangement had been temporarily postponed to obtain further clarification on the interpretation of the Conditional Pardon Order and the implications of the Release Order.

Najib’s legal battle dates back to August 23, 2022, when the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal and upheld his conviction and sentence. He began serving his prison term at Kajang Prison on the same day.

He subsequently submitted a petition for a royal pardon to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on September 2, 2022. The application was considered at a Pardons Board meeting on January 29, 2024.

On February 2, 2024, the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division announced that the Pardons Board had agreed to reduce Najib’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years, while cutting his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
