Anwar Slams Opposition For Staying Silent On Corruption While Playing Up Race And Religion

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has criticised opposition parties for allegedly remaining silent when corruption and abuse of power affecting the people’s livelihoods are raised, while being quick to exploit racial and religious sentiments.

He said the opposition’s contrasting responses raised questions about their commitment to addressing issues that directly affect the public.

“When corruption and abuse of power that affect people’s lives are raised, the opposition chooses to remain silent.

“Yet when it comes to inflaming racial sentiments and exploiting religion, they are always at the forefront,” he said in a statement.

Referring to remarks he made at the recent Forum Ilmuwan Madani, Anwar warned that remaining silent over corruption involving billions of ringgit could gradually cause society to become accustomed to tolerating wrongdoing.

He stressed that he would not compromise on corruption for as long as he remained entrusted with leading the country.

“As long as I carry this responsibility, I will not compromise on corruption, because those who commit corruption belong in prison,” he said.

Last Friday, Anwar was reported to have personally disagreed with UMNO’s decision to settle the RM50 million fine imposed on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

He said that while UMNO might be acting out of friendship towards Najib, the move could send the wrong message to the public about the country’s efforts to combat corruption.
