U.S. President Donald Trump will personally decide the deadline for Hamas to accept an Israel-backed proposal to halt fighting in Gaza, the White House said on Thursday.
Trump previously stated he had given Hamas three to four days to consider a 20-point document outlining terms for disarmament—conditions the group has rejected in the past. Sources close to Hamas confirmed the group is currently reviewing the proposal.
When asked in a Fox News interview about the point at which Hamas would be considered to have “rejected” the plan, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said:
“It is a red line that must be determined by the President of the United States, and I’m confident he will do so. The President and his team have worked hard to produce a comprehensive and detailed 20-point plan.”
Leavitt added, “This is a reasonable plan, and we hope and expect Hamas to accept it so that we can move forward.”
The proposal includes an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of all Hamas-held hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israel, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the formation of a transitional government led by an international body.
Many of these 20 points mirror elements from previous ceasefire proposals over the past two years, some of which were accepted and later rejected at different stages by either Israel or Hamas.
