Melaka police have seized 351 imitation firearms that closely resemble real pistols, believed to have been marketed to schoolchildren. The raid took place at a business premises in Taman Teknologi Cheng.
State police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the operation uncovered toy guns imported from a neighbouring country, purchased at RM20 to RM30 each and resold for as much as RM300.
The total estimated value of the seized items is RM105,300.
Speaking at a press conference at the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters on Wednesday (July 16), DCP Dzulkhairi revealed that some teachers had found the toy guns in students’ school bags. “When questioned, the children said they used them to shoot lizards,” he said.
In addition to the imitation weapons, police also seized two boxes of plastic pellets stored at the back of the premises.
A 42-year-old man, believed to be the caretaker of the shop, was detained during the raid. Investigations showed that the business had no valid licence or permit to import or sell such items. The toy guns were being sold both online and through walk-in customers.
The case is being investigated under Section 36 of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both upon conviction.
