In light of recent cases of bullying, rape, and even murder in schools, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) has urged the government to immediately allocate funds to install CCTV cameras in all national schools. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat during the 2026 budget debate, he stressed that schools should be safe havens for students, but repeated incidents have created a trust deficit among parents.
“Schools are supposed to be the safest place after home, but now words like murder, rape, and bullying are no longer foreign here,” Saddiq said. Highlighting that basic CCTV cameras cost only RM50, while solar-powered units are about RM200, he added, “Even if the cost is high, saving one life is worth it.”
Saddiq also called for stronger accountability, urging the government to dismantle the “bully support system” that protects perpetrators. In some advanced countries, not only are bullies held responsible, but also wardens, principals, and law enforcement units that respond slowly. “If a student has been raped, killed, or bullied, what does the school’s reputation matter? What matters is the safety and lives of our children,” he said.
The MP’s remarks underscore the urgent need for preventive measures in schools, including CCTV and a robust system of accountability, to restore public trust and ensure the safety of students nationwide.
