ChatGPT is about to get a lot more… human. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that starting in December, verified adult users will be able to enjoy fewer restrictions on the platform—including access to adult content—while still keeping safety a priority.
Altman explained that ChatGPT’s earlier limitations were designed to handle sensitive mental health topics carefully, but for most users, the rules made the AI feel less useful and less fun. Now, with new safety tools in place, OpenAI feels confident loosening the reins.
The update will also make ChatGPT more personable, letting users interact with a version that responds like a friend, uses emojis, and chats in a more human-like way—if they choose. Altman stressed that these features are opt-in only; no one will see them unless they actively request it.
The move comes alongside a new age-verification system, ensuring that adult users are treated as adults, while minors remain protected. While most people can safely enjoy the expanded freedom, Altman noted a tiny fraction of users with fragile mental states could still face risks, so safeguards will remain in place.
The announcement sparked conversation online, with users welcoming a ChatGPT experience that feels more genuine and less like a rule-bound machine. As Altman put it, the goal is simple: “People don’t want chaos—they just want honest, real interaction.”
