Kuala Lumpur To Go On Lockdown: Six Highways, 25 Roads Closed For ASEAN Summit

Date:

Six major highways and 25 main roads across Kuala Lumpur will be closed in stages from October 26 to 28 in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

The six affected highways are:

  1. ELITE Highway (KLIA–Putrajaya)
  2. New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) (Subang–Jalan Duta)
  3. Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
  4. North-South Expressway (PLUS) (Sungai Buloh–Jalan Duta)
  5. Maju Expressway (MEX)
  6. KL–Seremban Highway (Sungai Besi–City Centre).

Director of the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said 1,111 traffic personnel—comprising 91 officers and 1,020 members—will be deployed throughout the summit. Their duties include escorting VVIP convoys, managing traffic flow, and enforcing road regulations during the high-level event.

He said rehearsals for convoy movements from KLIA and Subang Air Base to hotels around Kuala Lumpur, KLCC, and Seri Negara have begun and will continue until October 24. Malaysia will start receiving foreign delegates from October 25 to 28, during which the staged road closures and diversions will take effect.

Motorists are advised to avoid affected routes and use alternative roads to prevent congestion. The public is also encouraged to plan ahead and use public transport such as the monorail, LRT, MRT, or buses.

“For media and event staff, please carry your work passes and arrive early to avoid being caught in traffic,” he said during a press conference at the JSPT Director’s Mandate Ceremony held at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL).

Mohd Yusri also reminded police personnel to stay alert and maintain their health, especially amid rising influenza cases.

When asked about Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan’s earlier statement that downtown Kuala Lumpur would be fully closed, Yusri clarified that it will be implemented comprehensively for security reasons.

“This year’s summit will involve major world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, so police will take every necessary measure to ensure security and smooth traffic flow. JSPT will conduct periodic traffic diversions and closures to facilitate delegate movement between hotels, KLCC, and KLIA,” he said.

He added that 16,000 police personnel from across Malaysia will be mobilized between October 23 and 28 to assist in traffic control and security operations in the capital.
