U.S. President Donald Trump described Malaysia as a “great and vibrant country” following the conclusion of his two-day official visit for the 47th ASEAN Summit.
Posting on Truth Social on Monday as he departed for Japan, Trump highlighted that the United States had signed important trade and rare earth agreements with Malaysia, the summit host. He also emphasized witnessing the historic signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday.
“NO WAR! Millions of lives saved. An honor for me to do this. Now, off to Japan!!!” the U.S. leader wrote.
Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday morning at around 10 a.m. and departed at 10:06 a.m. on Monday, marking his first official visit to Malaysia since returning to the presidency in January and his first participation in an ASEAN leaders’ summit during his second term.
During the summit, Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing of the historic Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet. In addition, Trump signed trade agreements with Thailand and Cambodia.
As part of his busy schedule, Trump also held a bilateral meeting with Anwar, signing the U.S.-Malaysia Reciprocal Trade Agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Minerals between the two nations. The U.S. president also attended the 13th ASEAN-U.S. Summit on Sunday.
Trump is only the third U.S. president to visit Malaysia, following Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 and Barack Obama in 2014 and 2015.
