Drug-Influenced Man Arrested for Causing Chaos at Temple

Date:

Police have arrested a local man suspected of committing an act of mischief at a place of worship along Jalan Merdeka, Kampung Baru Ampang, yesterday.

Ampang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail, said the 35-year-old suspect was believed to be intoxicated and under the influence of drugs during the incident.

He said the incident occurred around 9 a.m. when the complainant, a member of the Malaysian Volunteer Department (RELA), was on duty providing security in the temple area.

“The complainant reported hearing a commotion at a restaurant within the temple compound before spotting a man acting suspiciously, believed to be drunk and talking to himself.

“When asked to leave, the suspect allegedly became aggressive and pushed over an incense burner, scattering ashes all over the floor,” he said in a statement today.

The RELA member detained the man and immediately contacted the police for assistance.

Checks revealed that the suspect had eight prior criminal records related to drug offences. Urine tests also confirmed he was positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“Initial investigations found that the suspect acted out while under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” Mohd Azam added.

The suspect has been detained to assist investigations under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.

A remand application was expected to be filed at the Ampang Magistrate’s Court today.
