PayPal’s shares have skyrocketed after the company announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT this week — marking one of the biggest tech collaborations of the year.
On Tuesday (October 28), alongside Nvidia’s major announcements on 6G and energy infrastructure, PayPal revealed that ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly users will soon be able to buy products directly within the AI chatbot using PayPal. The news sent PayPal’s stock surging by 10%, its strongest jump in months.
As part of the deal, PayPal’s vast global merchant network will now be integrated into ChatGPT, allowing businesses to seamlessly sell goods and services through the platform. The company also raised its full-year profit forecast — for the second time — and declared its first-ever dividend in its 27-year history.
“This marks a whole new paradigm for shopping,” said PayPal CEO Alex Chriss. “Agentic commerce — where AI takes the lead in making purchases for users — is going to be a big part of the future.”
The integration means that instead of browsing multiple websites, checking reviews, or comparing prices manually, users can simply ask ChatGPT to find and purchase what they need.
Financial analysts have praised the move, with Evercore ISI calling it a potential “silver bullet” that could reignite PayPal’s growth and position it at the intersection of two massive global trends — artificial intelligence and digital payments.
“We want PayPal to be available anywhere and everywhere consumers want to pay,” Chriss said, adding that the partnership puts the company “on offense, shifting from stabilization to acceleration.”
PayPal now projects full-year adjusted earnings per share between $5.35 and $5.39, up from its earlier guidance of $5.15 to $5.30. The newly approved quarterly dividend of $0.14 per share represents a 10% payout of adjusted profits.
Chriss emphasized that this partnership is about making digital commerce faster, smarter, and safer: “We have hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who can now click the ‘Buy with PayPal’ button directly inside ChatGPT — enjoying a secure, instant checkout experience powered by AI.”
