The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an advisory on Typhoon Fung-wong, which was detected early this morning about 129 kilometres southwest of Vigan City in the Philippines.
In a statement today, MetMalaysia said the typhoon is moving west-northwest at a speed of 30 kilometres per hour, with maximum sustained winds reaching 120 kilometres per hour.
“Typhoon Fung-wong was located at latitude 17.4° north and longitude 119.2° east, approximately 1,196 kilometres northeast of Kudat, Sabah,” the department said.
MetMalaysia cautioned that the typhoon could generate strong winds and rough seas over the South China Sea, potentially affecting maritime activities.
Meanwhile, the department also issued a thunderstorm warning for several states and territories — Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor — effective until noon today.
Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are expected to hit several areas across Malaysia. In Kedah, affected districts include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu. Over in Perak, the weather warning covers Kerian, Larut Matang dan Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, and Hilir Perak.
Selangor will also experience similar conditions in Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat, and Sepang. In Negeri Sembilan, Jelebu and Seremban are expected to be affected, while in Johor, the districts of Muar, Batu Pahat, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru have been placed under alert.
