Malaysia Not Behind Suspension of Thailand–Cambodia Peace Deal, Says PM Anwar

Date:

Malaysia’s role had nothing to do with the suspension of the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified.

Anwar said Bangkok’s decision was made after calls for Cambodia to fully adhere to the details of the agreement, which would lead to the release of 18 detainees in Thailand.

He also dismissed claims by former Thai Major General Rangsi Kitiyansap, who alleged that Malaysia and Anwar were the “invisible hand” influencing the direction and implementation of the peace talks.

Anwar stressed that Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had never questioned Malaysia’s responsibility or role as a mediator in the peace process.

“In fact, Prime Minister Anutin recently conveyed in his message that Malaysia’s mediation role remains respected and valued,” Anwar said.
