Chinese actress and singer Esther Yu has once again found herself at the centre of controversy, this time during a recent promotional trip to Thailand.
The Speed and Love star travelled to the country for endorsement events and drama promotions, but her appearance at one of the functions in a bright green gown drew criticism from Thai and Chinese netizens alike.
Her choice of attire was deemed inappropriate as Thailand is currently observing a national mourning period following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
During this period, the public has been encouraged to wear subdued colours — such as black, grey, or navy — for approximately 90 days. Many online users accused Esther of being disrespectful for not adhering to local customs.
“It’s a national mourning period. Doesn’t she know that? How could she show up in bright green?” one netizen wrote on social media.
Others also criticised the actress for allegedly being unprepared at the event, claiming she relied heavily on translators instead of learning basic Thai greetings.
Some fans compared her unfavourably to fellow Chinese actress Zhao Lusi, who impressed Thai fans in 2023 by making an effort to communicate in their language.
