Singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter is set to take the lead in a musical film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, which she will also produce.
The 26-year-old will star under the direction of Lorene Scafaria, who is also writing the script for the motion picture based on Lewis Carroll’s beloved novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Sources told Variety that Sabrina first pitched the idea to Universal in 2024, and the project gained momentum after Scafaria joined as writer and director. Carpenter will produce the film alongside Marc Platt of Marc Platt Productions, and Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton via Alloy Entertainment.
The project is described as a “passion project” for Carpenter, who has previous film credits including Horns (2013) alongside Daniel Radcliffe and the Netflix hit Tall Girl 2.
Sabrina’s musical background also makes her a natural fit for the role. She has performed ABBA hits on her Short n’ Sweet tour and was previously considered for a role in Mamma Mia! 3. Producer Judy Craymer revealed that she envisioned Carpenter as a potential daughter figure to Meryl Streep’s character, citing her admiration for the pop star and musical talent.
The original Mamma Mia! debuted in 2008, followed by 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, featuring an all-star cast including Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried has publicly supported the idea of Carpenter joining the franchise for the third installment.
With Carpenter at the helm as both star and producer, the new Alice in Wonderland musical promises a fresh, modern twist on the classic tale.
