Man Jailed 3 Years After Senior Citizen Dies from Mosque Assault

Date:

A 38-year-old man was sentenced to three years in jail by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to causing serious injuries to an acquaintance, who later died from his wounds.

Sessions Court Judge Roslan Hamid handed down the sentence to Muhammad Naim Mohmad Roedzi, ordering it to commence from his arrest on Nov 7.

According to the charge, Muhammad Naim had intentionally inflicted severe injuries on a 65-year-old man at the Al-Jamiul Badawi Mosque in Kepala Batas on Nov 6 at around 11.43pm. The case was framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and may include a fine.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a commotion outside the mosque before seeing the accused and the victim in front of the premises. The victim was rushed to Kepala Batas Hospital with serious facial injuries and a fractured right thigh, and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun urged the court to impose a suitable sentence to serve as a lesson. In mitigation, Muhammad Naim requested his sentence to start from the date of arrest, citing his seizures, mental health issues, and the fact that he assists his mother at the mosque.

The accused was seen crying and apologizing to his mother as he was escorted to the lockup at the end of the proceedings.
