A 21-year-old woman, Angel Yang Pei Yun, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for negligence that resulted in the death of her four-year-old son. The boy was brought to the hospital too late to receive life-saving treatment.
Julau police chief, DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah, confirmed that Angel was charged at the Sarikei Court under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. The sentence is effective from her remand on Oct 31, 2025.
In addition to prison, Angel must serve 240 hours of community service and execute a RM50,000 good behaviour bond for two years, supported by two local sureties. She has been transferred to Sibu Prison to begin her sentence.
The case arose in Julau after the child was rushed unconscious to Sibu Hospital on Oct 21 with a brain haemorrhage and fractured skull, succumbing to his injuries on Oct 25. Investigations found no signs of abuse, and authorities concluded the injuries were caused by parental negligence.
DSP Alif urged parents and guardians to prioritise the safety and care of their children.
“Children are fully dependent on adults, and negligence in any form can have tragic consequences,” he said, adding that the case serves as a stark reminder of parental responsibilities.
