Lil Nas X Pleads Not Guilty in Assault Case, Faces Up to 5 Years in Jail

Date:

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Nas X appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on November 17 over charges stemming from his August arrest for allegedly assaulting police officers. The “Old Town Road” singer, real name Montero Hill, had previously missed a court date while undergoing inpatient treatment in another state.

Lil Nas X pleaded not guilty to four felony counts—three for battery of a police officer and one for resisting an officer—after authorities reported he was found walking naked in public. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

During the brief hearing, a judge scheduled a preliminary hearing for March 12, 2026. Standing beside his attorney Drew Findling, Lil Nas X appeared in a brown jacket, khaki pants, and cowboy boots. Findling told reporters, “Montero is doing amazing, doing great, and we’re super happy for him. We’re just looking forward to a positive resolution in the case.”

Lil Nas X, the first openly gay artist to win a Country Music Association Award and a two-time Grammy winner for “Old Town Road,” continues to receive support from his family. His father, Robert Stafford, said in August that the rapper was “very remorseful” and committed to getting the help he needs.
