The search operation for a man reported missing after being swept away by a flash flood in the Klang River near Saloma Bridge has been extended into Selangor, authorities confirmed.
The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said on Tuesday that the operation entered its second day.
“As of 9:30 this morning, the search has been continued with the assistance of the Water Rescue Team (PPDA), using surface search methods along the Klang River extending into Selangor. Drones are also being deployed in the operation,” the department said in a statement.
Unstable weather conditions, particularly rain in northern Kuala Lumpur, have caused water levels to rise rapidly, creating strong currents that hinder rescue efforts.
According to earlier reports, Titiwangsa and Jalan Hang Tuah Fire and Rescue Stations were dispatched to the scene on Monday around 5:30 pm. Upon arrival, 12 people were found trapped beneath the bridge.
Rescue teams used ropes to save 11 individuals, including one Malaysian and ten foreign nationals, while one man was swept away by the river’s current.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Asst. Comm. Sazalee Adam, identified the missing man as a 34-year-old local resident.
He reportedly attempted to escape his vehicle as the flash flood hit, but the strong current swept him away. The man is known to be a site supervisor for a Klang River improvement project.
Police confirmed the river’s water level has reached nearly six meters, and the search operation will continue as extensively as possible from the incident site.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant in areas prone to sudden flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
