Frankenstein Surgery? Italian Doctor Claims Human Head Transplant Is Ready

Date:

In what sounds like a plot ripped from a sci-fi novel, Italian neurosurgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero is once again making headlines with his claim that he’s ready to perform the world’s first human head transplant.

Canavero, who has been advocating this radical surgery for years, insists he has already succeeded in transplanting heads onto monkeys, dogs, and human cadavers. His next goal? To remove the head of a patient with a terminal illness and attach it to the healthy body of a brain-dead donor.

Despite viral videos and sensational claims online, medical experts remain highly skeptical. Most say the procedure is scientifically and ethically impossible. The most critical challenge, according to experts like Dr. Allen Furr, lies in reconnecting the spinal cord—a feat science still hasn’t achieved, despite 250,000 spinal cord injuries occurring annually worldwide.

Canavero’s concept, dubbed “HEAVEN,” first gained traction in 2012. A year later, Russian computer scientist Valery Spiridonov volunteered to be the first recipient due to his degenerative condition, Werdnig-Hoffmann disease. However, Spiridonov later withdrew from the experiment, choosing to start a family and move on with life.

Critics, including Furr—author of A Test of Morals—highlight the numerous hurdles: complex surgery requiring continuous blood flow, total immune suppression to prevent rejection, and the sheer lack of precedent in reviving a person after full decapitation.

Even if such a surgery were technically possible, the patient would likely face unimaginable pain and some form of paralysis. For now, experts say this kind of transplant remains firmly in the realm of science fiction.
