A landlord in Zhengzhou, Henan, China, has won praise for his kindness after returning a tenant’s deposit and remaining cash when he discovered the young man was struggling financially.
According to a report dated 26 October, the 20-year-old migrant worker had rented a room from the landlord, Mr Lian, under a six-month contract with rent paid monthly. He had previously paid his rent on time.
However, when the final month’s rent was due, the tenant suddenly disappeared. Mr Lian’s messages went unanswered, and his calls were ignored.
Concerned, the landlord went to the room to look for him. There, he found the room thoroughly cleaned, along with 277 yuan in cash and a handwritten note.
“I really have no money left. I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your messages. This is all I have left, so I’m giving it all to you. I’ve cleaned the room,” the note read.
Touched by the message, Mr Lian worried that the young man might be facing serious difficulties. He called him repeatedly until he finally managed to get through.
The tenant apologised profusely and explained that his family had encountered an unexpected emergency.
After hearing his situation, Mr Lian decided to return the tenant’s entire 900-yuan security deposit, along with the 277 yuan he had left behind.
In total, the landlord transferred 1,177 yuan back to the young man, choosing compassion over collecting the outstanding rent.
