A black rhinoceros weighing over one tonne suddenly attacked a zookeeper at Kumamoto City Zoological and Botanical Gardens in Japan on Sunday (April 26), leaving the staff member with skull and cervical spine fractures.
The incident occurred at around 11am while the keeper was guiding one male and one female rhino out of an activity area. After the male rhino returned to its resting enclosure, the keeper entered an adjacent space before the gate was fully secured.
Authorities said the male rhino unexpectedly charged out and struck the keeper, causing him to fall against a fence.
The injured staff member was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with serious head and neck injuries. However, he is reported to be in a stable condition and did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
The zoo management expressed deep regret over the incident and apologised publicly, stating that measures will be introduced to prevent similar accidents in future.
Officials also stressed that animal exhibits will continue, but only under stricter safety protocols to ensure both staff and visitors can safely enjoy the facilities.
