Café Worker’s Viral Post Sparks Debate Over RM1,700 Salary and Heavy Workload

Date:

A café employee has gone viral after sharing on Threads that his RM1,700 salary does not reflect the multitude of tasks he handles daily at work.

User @arashbob17 detailed his responsibilities, saying he acts as barista, cashier, floor crew, cleaner, kitchen helper, trainer, and workflow organiser — essentially managing “everything from A to Z.”

The post quickly drew attention, with Malaysians expressing mixed reactions. Some sympathised with the worker, highlighting the heavy workload common in the food and beverage industry. One user wrote, “I’ve been there, done that. I was the only staff on shift. Alhamdulillah, I resigned from that place.” Others noted that such experience could be valuable, encouraging the worker to leverage his all-rounder skills for future opportunities or even to run his own café one day.

However, some netizens disagreed, arguing that the tasks described are standard for baristas and entry-level positions. “Suffering and grinding is normal in entry-level roles,” one comment read, while another noted that similar duties were part of their own past experience, despite lower pay.

The discussion highlights ongoing debates about fair compensation and realistic job expectations in Malaysia’s F&B sector.
