A suspected sex attacker remains on the run after a group of dogs came to the rescue of two women during an attempted assault at a park in Melbourne’s south-east.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Righetti Oval in Kooyong, where the women were walking their dogs along Gardiners Creek.
According to reports, a man suddenly emerged from nearby bushes and grabbed one of the women in what police are investigating as an attempted sexual assault.
The woman managed to break free, but the suspect then allegedly turned his attention to the second woman. She also fought back successfully, preventing the attack.
As the women resisted, their dogs sprang into action, barking loudly and chasing the suspect as he fled towards a tunnel beneath the Monash Freeway.
Video recorded by one of the women captured six dogs of different breeds pursuing the man. During the chase, a blue heeler reportedly leapt at the suspect and bit his leg, tearing his trousers.
The suspect was heard shouting at the dogs before eventually escaping. He remains at large.
Victoria Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for information to help identify the suspect.
He is described as being of African appearance and was last seen wearing a black tracksuit, a grey hooded top, white socks and slide sandals, while carrying a large bright blue backpack.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers as investigations continue.
