Besides checking your passport, flight tickets and hotel bookings, there’s one more thing Malaysians can do before travelling — register your trip with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra).
Why does this matter?
If something unexpected happens while you’re overseas, such as a natural disaster, political unrest or major disruption, registering your travel details can help the nearest Malaysian embassy, high commission or consulate contact you and provide assistance.
How To Register
The easiest way is through e-Konsular, Wisma Putra’s online consular platform.
You can register or log in before your trip and provide your travel details.
But what if you can’t access e-Konsular?
You may be able to register directly with the Malaysian embassy, high commission or consulate in the country you’re visiting.
Some missions accept registrations by email. For example, the Malaysian Consulate General in Dubai allows Malaysians on short visits to register their presence via email.
However, not every Malaysian mission uses the same process, so check the official website of the Malaysian mission in your destination first.
What Details Do You Need?
Depending on the mission, you may be asked for:
- Full name
- Passport number
- Contact number
- Emergency contact details
- Overseas accommodation address
- Date of arrival
- Expected date of departure
If email registration is available, simply follow the instructions provided by the relevant Malaysian mission.
What Is MyWorldAlert?
You may also come across MyWorldAlert, which is connected to the e-Konsular system.
Wisma Putra has consolidated the accounts for both platforms. Existing users can use their e-Konsular password to access MyWorldAlert, while new users only need to register through either platform.
Don’t Forget Your Travel Documents
It’s also a good idea to keep copies of your important travel documents before leaving Malaysia.
Save copies of your:
- Passport
- Flight itinerary
- Hotel or accommodation details
- Travel insurance
Keep digital copies somewhere secure, and consider having a separate physical copy as a backup.
