IKEA Kuching To Open In December 2026, Marking First Store In East Malaysia

Date:

IKEA Malaysia has announced that IKEA Kuching is set to open its doors in December 2026, marking a new chapter for the home furnishing brand in East Malaysia and bringing its retail experience closer to customers in Sarawak.

The Kuching outlet will be IKEA Malaysia’s first small-format store and its first physical store in East Malaysia. It builds on the company’s existing presence in the region through e-commerce and fulfilment services, giving Sarawakians the opportunity to experience IKEA’s home furnishing ideas, products and expertise in person.

IKEA Malaysia Country Retail Director Malcolm Pruys said the company had listened to feedback from customers in Sarawak and was looking forward to welcoming them to the new store.

He said the opening was part of IKEA’s wider ambition to make well-designed and functional home furnishing solutions more accessible, while ensuring the experience remains relevant to the way people in Kuching live.

A Smaller Store With The IKEA Experience

Unlike IKEA’s four larger outlets currently operating in Malaysia, IKEA Kuching will adopt a compact store format designed to provide customers with a more convenient shopping experience.

Visitors will be able to explore room settings, home furnishing ideas and selected products available for immediate purchase. Customers will also have access to a wider range of IKEA products that can be ordered.

The store format is intended to help shoppers move easily from inspiration to practical solutions, whether they are looking to make a small improvement at home, redesign a room or furnish an entire house.

Understanding How Sarawakians Live

In preparation for the new store, IKEA conducted research into how people in Kuching live, including visits to local homes to understand their everyday needs, challenges and aspirations.

The company found that family, togetherness and hospitality play an important role in homes across Kuching. Living and dining areas often serve multiple purposes, from spending time with family to hosting relatives and friends.

Storage and organisation were also identified as common challenges for both landed properties and high-rise homes.

Pruys said IKEA wanted customers to recognise aspects of their own lives when they visit the Kuching store, with solutions aimed at helping families organise their homes, create more functional spaces and accommodate everyday activities.

Local Talent To Be Part Of IKEA Kuching

As preparations continue for the opening, IKEA Malaysia will also begin engaging with the local community to build its team in Kuching.

The company said it aims to create opportunities for local talent to develop their careers with IKEA while playing a role in bringing the brand’s experience to customers across Sarawak.

IKEA Kuching is expected to open to the public in December 2026, with further details on the exact opening date, store features and customer offerings to be announced in the coming months.

The opening will mark an important milestone for IKEA Malaysia as it expands its physical presence beyond Peninsular Malaysia and brings its home furnishing concept closer to customers in East Malaysia.
