Mahjong Mania Hits California: Gen Z Embraces ‘Granny Core’ Nights

Date:

Mahjong has become the latest social craze among young people in California, with groups of four enjoying the classic Chinese tile game in venues that resemble nightclubs. For Asian Americans, it’s also a way to put down their phones and reconnect with community and culture.

Across the U.S., more restaurants, bars, and nightclubs are hosting “Mahjong Nights.” Data from Eventbrite shows a 179% increase in mahjong events from 2023 to 2024. The platform noted that Gen Z is increasingly drawn to “granny core” activities like baking and sewing.

At San Francisco’s YLL Mahjong Club, instructors guide participants, while cocktails and DJs add to the fun. Events can attract up to 200 people, with attendees saying they enjoy the experience and the chance to meet new friends.
