‘Malaysia Is A Permanent Sauna’: Malaysians Say Two Showers A Day Is The Bare Minimum

Date:

As Malaysia continues facing hot and humid weather, an online debate has gone viral after Malaysians began arguing over one surprisingly controversial topic — how often people should shower.

The discussion exploded on Threads after user @hamzahf88 questioned why some Malaysians still avoid showering regularly despite living in what he described as “basically a permanent sauna”.

In the post, which quickly gained attention online, the user asked: “For those living in Malaysia who don’t shower at least twice a day, why?”

According to him, Malaysia’s tropical climate makes frequent showers almost necessary, especially since even short periods outdoors can leave people drenched in sweat.

He added that while skipping showers may be understandable in colder countries, it was far harder to justify under Malaysia’s constant heat and humidity.

The post soon triggered widespread reactions from netizens, many of whom shared their own bathing habits and frustrations over hygiene in public spaces.

One user, @zzz_lim_zzz_lim_zzz, said they usually showered at least three times daily during hotter periods, especially when staying in places without air conditioning.

The user added that temperatures already felt unbearable before 9am.

Another netizen, @damien_mikeng, described showering twice a day as the “minimum standard” for surviving life in Malaysia, while @skywaylus admitted finding it difficult to understand how some people could skip showers despite sweating throughout the day.

The discussion later shifted toward public transport hygiene, with several users complaining about unpleasant body odours on buses and trains early in the morning.

User @bitterpfferfoam said even those rushing for work should at least wash up and use deodorant before leaving the house.

Others echoed similar sentiments, including @beriburibunga, who expressed frustration over people returning home sweaty after work but still choosing not to shower before going to bed.

Some commenters approached the topic humorously while agreeing with the overall point.

User @jonnyyeong joked that office days usually required “three showers”, while weekends could stretch to “four or five” because Malaysia genuinely felt like living inside a sauna.

Meanwhile, @ms.cutamora said multiple showers throughout the day were often necessary simply to stay comfortable, particularly in homes without air conditioning.

The viral conversation has since sparked broader discussions about hygiene, weather and daily habits in Malaysia, with many agreeing that the country’s rising temperatures are making frequent showers feel less like a luxury and more like a survival routine.
