A Malaysian comedian is facing public criticism after an Instagram post referencing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sparked outrage over the ethics of comedy. The post, which allegedly promoted the comedian’s murukku business while alluding to Epstein-related allegations, has drawn condemnation for being “distasteful” and insensitive to victims.
The controversy revolves around the so-called Epstein files, reportedly containing a list of high-profile figures, including former US President Donald Trump and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, linked to Epstein allegations. Being named, however, does not imply guilt.
Many netizens expressed their disapproval on social media, arguing that using a case involving sexual abuse of minors as comedic content is inappropriate. “Underage children were raped and tortured, and you’re using that reality as content for clout? Have some basic decency and respect,” read one post on Threads. Others called the content “tone deaf” and a “mockery” of victims.
The incident has reignited debates on the boundaries of humour, especially when touching on sensitive issues like sexual abuse and exploitation. Several users emphasised that comedy should not trivialise real-life trauma or abuse of power.
“At some point, there are lines in comedy. Real people suffered, and this isn’t something to joke about,” commented one critic, reflecting the widespread sentiment online. As of now, the comedian has not responded to the backlash.
