M’sian Thought His Roommate Was Broke After Living On Nasi Bujang And Instant Noodles — Until He Saw His Bank Balance

Date:

A Malaysian has shared how he mistakenly assumed his university roommate was struggling financially, only to discover that the roommate actually had far more savings than he did.

In a post on Threads, the individual recalled that his roommate lived extremely frugally throughout their university days. He regularly ate nasi bujang — a simple meal consisting of rice, gravy, egg and cucumber — while his cupboard was always stocked with instant noodles, which he ate whenever he skipped the university café.

Believing his roommate was short on money, the individual felt sorry for him and decided to treat him to lunch.

Before heading to eat, they stopped at a bank to withdraw cash, as digital payment methods were not common at the time.

While checking his account balance, the roommate showed the screen to the individual, saying he wanted to make sure he still had enough money for meals later.

To his surprise, the roommate’s bank balance was significantly higher than his own.

Despite having substantial savings, the roommate continued living as though he had very little money, choosing to spend only on necessities and avoiding unnecessary expenses.

The experience taught the individual that a person’s spending habits do not always reflect their financial situation.

He noted that while some people live frugally because they genuinely face financial hardship, others simply prefer saving their money and spending cautiously.

He also reflected on advice from his mother, who reminded him that while saving is important, people should not be overly calculative when it comes to food.
