A Malaysian woman has sparked an online debate after deleting a dating app following a seemingly simple question from a man she had met through the platform.
In a Threads post, the woman said she had removed the dating app from her phone after a man asked her, “Do you cook?”
While the question may appear harmless, she said it immediately gave her the “ick” and made her question why such questions were still being asked in modern dating.
“Girl. Instant ick. I work from 9 to 6. I’m not a housewife. Weih why do such questions still exist in 2026?” she wrote.
Her reaction quickly attracted attention online, but many users were unimpressed and criticised her for being overly sensitive about the question.
Some argued that asking whether someone cooks does not automatically mean the person expects them to become a housewife, suggesting it could simply have been an attempt to learn more about her lifestyle and interests.
One netizen even challenged her argument that working full-time made cooking difficult, sharing photos of meals he had prepared after returning home from work.
“If you’re lazy, just say so,” he bluntly commented.
The discussion then expanded into a wider debate over dating expectations, with some users questioning whether a basic question about cooking should really be considered a red flag.
Others suggested that compatibility in a relationship can involve everyday matters such as cooking, household responsibilities and lifestyle habits, making such questions a natural part of getting to know someone.
