Ramadan Bazaar Vendor Fined RM300 for Handling Food in Slippers

A Ramadan bazaar vendor was fined RM300 by the Kuala Berang Magistrate’s Court today for handling food while wearing only slippers instead of proper footwear.

Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim handed down the penalty after 24-year-old Shahrul Iskandar Shamsulyuzi pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the charge, Shahrul Iskandar failed to wear shoes while managing his food stall at the Kuala Ping Ramadan Bazaar at 4.45pm on 5 March 2025. He was prosecuted under Regulation 32(1)(b) of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, which carries a maximum fine of RM1,000.

Meanwhile, another vendor, 47-year-old Shamsulyuzi Abdul Latiff Teo, was fined RM2,000 for selling “baby pineapples” containing an illegal sweetener. Laboratory tests revealed the fruit contained 255 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of cyclamate.

The offence occurred at Shamsulyuzi’s stall at the Kuala Berang Ramadan Bazaar at 4.45pm on 19 March 2025. He was charged under Regulation 133(3) of the Food Regulations 1985.
