A horse and buggy collided with a car in a shocking road incident in Harlow, Essex, leaving a driver shaken after the animal smashed directly into his vehicle and shattered the windscreen.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning on a major road, with footage from inside a Mercedes showing a horse pulling a trap galloping rapidly towards the car after the rider had reportedly been thrown off following an earlier collision with another vehicle.
The driver can be heard shouting in shock as the horse approaches at speed before crashing into the front of the car, causing the windscreen to completely shatter and showering the interior with glass.
Further footage shows the aftermath of the impact, with the driver stepping out of the damaged vehicle while visibly shaken, as another person rushes to check on his condition.
An overturned buggy was seen nearby, while the Mercedes sustained significant damage including a destroyed windscreen and broken wing mirror.
Essex Police confirmed it was called to reports of a collision involving a horse and cart and two vehicles at Katherine’s Way, Harlow, at around 6.30pm on Tuesday. Officers said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Separately, individuals linked to the incident claimed on social media that the rider had been thrown from the trap after being struck by another vehicle, which then caused the horse to become spooked and run onto the road, leading to the secondary crash.
Police have not yet confirmed the sequence of events and are continuing enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
