A TikTok user from Thailand has caught widespread attention online after revealing that he earns more than 10,000 baht (about RM1,400) a month by creating and selling unique keychains made from dead mosquitoes.
The creator, known as Lee, shared his unusual business journey on his TikTok account, @leesaeslip, where he documented how a simple hobby turned into a profitable craft venture. In one of his posts, he wrote: “My name is Lee. I earn ten thousand baht by killing mosquitoes.”
Lee explained that his interest in mosquitoes began as a personal curiosity, where he would collect insects after killing them purely for observation. Over time, what started as a quirky habit gradually evolved into a creative idea.
His breakthrough came when he decided to turn the insects into keychains with glow-in-the-dark backdrops, initially just as a fun experiment. However, the unusual design quickly attracted attention from friends and family, encouraging him to develop it into a small business.
The novelty product eventually gained traction, particularly among overseas buyers who viewed it as a distinctive Thai souvenir. Demand began to grow steadily, prompting Lee to use mosquito traps to collect more materials for production.
Despite the increasing popularity, Lee admitted that supply has not been enough to meet customer orders. The unexpected demand has pushed him to look for additional sources of dead mosquitoes.
In a recent update, Lee even appealed for suppliers willing to collect and provide dead mosquitoes, offering payment for the effort. He also shared methods on how to properly kill and preserve the insects to prevent them from being eaten by ants.
Shortly after, Lee said a mosquito trap owner agreed to supply him with dead mosquitoes for free and also placed an order for his keychains, further boosting his small business.
His videos have since gone viral across Thailand, with one clip featuring the mosquito keychain product receiving more than 350,000 likes and over 3,000 comments, highlighting how unconventional ideas can sometimes turn into viral business success.
