‘What Is That Smell?’ Woman Horrified To Find Dead Snake Died Under Passenger Headrest

Date:

A woman in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, was left horrified after discovering a dead snake hidden inside her car, where it had reportedly been decomposing for several days.

The woman, identified as Wang, told reporters on August 19 that she first noticed something unusual on August 17 when a foul smell began lingering inside her vehicle. Despite checking around the car and even leaving the floor mats out to dry, she could not find the source of the odour.

The following day, Wang decided to investigate more closely after noticing that the smell was particularly strong around the headrest on the front passenger seat. However, when she moved it to check underneath, she was shocked to discover the body of a dead snake.

Wang said the snake had left visible signs of decomposition on the seat and appeared to have been dead for around three to four days. The discovery left her shaken, especially as she regularly parked the car outdoors near her workplace, where the surrounding area has relatively good greenery.

She believes the snake may have entered through the vehicle’s air-conditioning vent, which she said was wide enough for roughly two fingers to fit through. The exact circumstances of how the reptile got inside, however, remain unclear.

The bizarre discovery quickly sparked discussion online, with many social media users saying they would have been terrified to encounter a snake inside their vehicle. Some even described the incident as something that could leave them traumatised for life.

As snakes become more active during the warmer months, vehicles can provide sheltered hiding spots. Areas such as undercarriages, wheel arches and engine compartments contain dark, narrow spaces where snakes may seek shade and protection.

Drivers are therefore advised to park in safer areas whenever possible, avoiding tall grass, drains, piles of rocks and other locations where snakes may commonly be found. Keeping the car’s air-conditioning on recirculation mode when parking may also reduce the chances of animals entering through air-conditioning ducts.

Drivers should also make sure all doors and windows are properly closed and give the vehicle a quick inspection before getting inside, particularly if it has been parked outdoors for an extended period.

For those who have no choice but to park in rural or outdoor areas, extra caution is recommended. Any suspected snake infestation should be handled carefully, with professional pest or wildlife assistance sought rather than attempting to remove the animal yourself.
