Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in recognition of his outstanding professional achievements and contributions to society.
The honorary degree was conferred on August 10 during a ceremony presided over by Dr Wong Ying-ho, Chairman of the HKBU Board of Governors and Court.
Among the guests attending the ceremony were Dr Chacko Yiu-chai, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors and Court; Treasurer Lam Tze-kit; and Professor Rick Wong, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.
In his speech, Professor Wong described Andy Lau as a household name whose versatility, exceptional artistic achievements and personal charisma had made him synonymous with excellence and perseverance.
Lau, born in Hong Kong in 1961 and originally from Jiangmen, Guangdong, is one of the most prominent figures in the Chinese-language entertainment industry. He is an actor and singer and currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the 11th China Film Association.
He began his entertainment career after graduating from TVB’s artist training programme in 1981. Since then, Lau has appeared in more than 160 films and won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor three times.
Among his best-known films are Infernal Affairs, Running Out of Time and As Tears Go By, with his performances earning him widespread recognition across the Chinese-speaking world.
His achievements also extend to music. Lau has released more than 100 albums throughout his career, producing numerous popular songs including Wang Qing Shui and Chinese People.
Beyond entertainment, Lau has also been actively involved in charitable initiatives and efforts to support young filmmakers.
In 2024, he was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recognition of his long-standing contributions to charity and his support for young talent in the film industry.
The latest honorary doctorate adds another major milestone to Lau’s decades-long career in entertainment and public service.
