Following Taylor Swift’s box office domination in 2023 with her concert film, Billie Eilish is stepping into the spotlight with her own cinematic release. The Grammy and Oscar-winning singer will debut a concert film titled “Hit Me Hard and Soft”, named after her latest album, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures this March.
Eilish revealed the project via Instagram on Sunday night, sharing a picture alongside legendary filmmaker James Cameron — known for “Avatar” and “Titanic” — with the film set for release on March 20. True to Cameron’s affinity for advanced filmmaking formats, the concert film will be screened in 3D.
In 2023, at just 22 years old, Eilish became the youngest person to win two Academy Awards, earning her second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” from the “Barbie” soundtrack. She previously won an Oscar for the James Bond theme “No Time to Die”. Over her career, she has amassed nine Grammy wins from 32 nominations, including Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?”
Whether “Hit Me Hard and Soft” can match the stunning success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — which opened with $93.2 million and totaled $261.6 million worldwide — remains to be seen. However, its release is expected to boost theater attendance in what is shaping up to be a strong March lineup, including Pixar’s “Hoppers”, Warner Bros.’ “The Bride!”, and Amazon MGM’s “Project Hail Mary,” which launches the same weekend.
The upcoming release marks Eilish’s first concert film for theatrical release. In 2021, she released “Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles” exclusively on Disney+, directed by Robert Rodriguez and Oscar winner Patrick Osbourne, and performed at the Hollywood Bowl alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic under conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
