The music world is mourning the loss of Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Peabo Bryson, whose unforgettable voice brought some of Disney’s most beloved songs to life. He was 75.
Bryson’s family confirmed his passing on Sunday, revealing that the legendary performer had suffered a stroke. While an official cause of death has not been disclosed, his loved ones said he passed away peacefully surrounded by family and close friends.
“He transitioned peacefully at 5.00pm ET on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him,” the family said in a statement.
Born Robert Peapo Bryson in South Carolina, the future music icon discovered his passion for singing at a young age. He began performing as a teenager with local group Al Freeman and the Upsetters, where he earned the nickname “Peabo” after the group’s leader struggled to pronounce his middle name.
His professional music career took off in 1976 with the release of “Underground Music” under Atlanta-based Bang Records. The breakthrough paved the way for his debut album, Peabo, before he later signed with Capitol Records and established himself as one of R&B’s most distinctive voices.
Throughout his career, Bryson delivered a string of hit songs including Feel the Fire, Reaching for the Sky, I’m So into You, Can You Stop the Rain and If Ever You’re in My Arms Again, which became his first Top 10 pop hit in 1984.
However, Bryson’s greatest global recognition came through his iconic Disney collaborations. His duet with Celine Dion on Beauty and the Beast became one of the most celebrated movie ballads of all time, while his performance alongside Regina Belle on A Whole New World from Aladdin remains a defining Disney classic for generations of fans.
The singer was equally admired for his soulful duets with acclaimed artists such as Roberta Flack, producing memorable hits including Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, You’re Looking Like Love to Me and As Long as There’s Christmas.
Over a career spanning five decades, Peabo Bryson built a reputation as one of the finest balladeers in contemporary music, touching millions with his rich vocals and heartfelt performances.
Though the voice behind some of the world’s most cherished love songs has fallen silent, his music will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come.
