Dashcam Exposes Motorcyclist As Cause Of Viral Tunnel Crash, Say Police

Date:

Police have confirmed that a road accident which went viral on social media inside the Jalan Keramat-Pulai tunnel on May 10 was caused by the negligence of a motorcyclist.

The clarification comes after investigators reviewed dashcam footage that surfaced days after the crash and provided a clearer picture of how the incident unfolded.

According to Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamzah, the accident involved three vehicles — a Honda driven by a 26-year-old man, a Perodua Myvi driven by a 34-year-old woman, and a motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old man.

Initial investigations were complicated by conflicting accounts from those involved, making it difficult for authorities to determine the actual cause of the collision.

“When the initial police reports were lodged, no dashcam footage was submitted to assist the investigation,” Muhammad Najib said in a statement on Wednesday.

As a result, the case was initially classified as a Refer to Magistrate (RKM) case while police awaited additional evidence.

The breakthrough came on May 20 when investigators received dashcam footage capturing the entire incident. The video was subsequently included as key evidence in the investigation.

“After reviewing the recording, investigations found that the accident was caused by the negligence of the motorcyclist,” he said.

Following the findings, police issued summonses against the rider under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle and causing an accident.

The motorcyclist was also cited for riding without a valid driving licence.

Muhammad Najib stressed that all investigations are conducted professionally, transparently and based solely on facts and evidence obtained during the inquiry.

He emphasised that decisions taken by police are not influenced by outside parties and are made only after sufficient evidence has been gathered.

The public has also been urged to refrain from spreading speculation or inaccurate information that could create confusion regarding the case.

The incident attracted widespread attention after a Threads user shared a video of the crash online and questioned the manner in which the police investigation was being handled.
