FINAS CEO Confirms Talks Over Sudden Halt Of Konspirasi Screening

Date:

FINAS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib has confirmed that he held a three-way telephone discussion with the producer and distributor of the film Konspirasi, following its sudden removal from cinema screenings recently.

Azmir said the discussion helped provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the decision to halt the film’s theatrical run.

In a broader industry context, he noted that transparency in film distribution decisions is important to prevent speculation and maintain public confidence in the local entertainment sector.

He added that during the conversation, the producer clarified there was no external interference involved in the decision to withdraw the film, as had been speculated.

Azmir also advised the production team not to remain silent on the matter, stressing the importance of providing clear explanations to avoid misunderstandings.

He further explained that the situation in different markets may vary, noting that the film is still being screened in Singapore, possibly due to differences in the number of cinema locations and audience demand.

According to him, Singapore’s smaller number of cinemas may allow certain films to continue screening despite lower turnout, whereas in Malaysia the situation is more competitive.

He said local films face strong competition from both domestic and international titles, which can affect audience numbers and the number of screening locations.

Azmir added that when ticket sales decline, cinemas are likely to reduce the number of locations showing the film.

The issue gained public attention after the abrupt halt in screenings sparked speculation about possible external influence, which was later denied by the production company.

The producers have since confirmed that the decision to stop screenings from May 28 was made internally and was not part of any marketing strategy or publicity stunt, and was not influenced by any outside party.
