M. Nasir Sues Grab-Owned MyTeksi For Over RM5 Million Over Alleged Unauthorised Use Of His Name

Date:

Veteran singer-songwriter M. Nasir has filed a lawsuit against Grab-owned MyTeksi Sdn Bhd, seeking more than RM5 million in damages over the alleged unauthorised use of his name to market and promote beverages.

M. Nasir, whose real name is Datuk Mohd Nasir Mohamed, filed the suit together with his company, Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd, at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, naming MyTeksi as the sole defendant.

According to the writ of summons, the plaintiffs claim that the defendant used the M. Nasir name and brand in connection with beverages marketed as “Kegemaran M. Nasir” on its platform without obtaining his consent or authorisation.

The lawsuit alleges that the use of the name created an association with the renowned musician and was utilised for commercial and promotional purposes.

As part of the legal action, M. Nasir and his company are seeking injunctions to prevent MyTeksi, its agents and employees from continuing any alleged misrepresentation, misuse or exploitation of the artist’s name and reputation.

The plaintiffs are also asking the court to order the company to disclose, within seven days, a full account of profits generated from the sale of beverages marketed under the “Kegemaran M. Nasir” branding through the platform.

In addition, they are seeking damages to be assessed by the court or, alternatively, an account of profits allegedly earned from the sales in question.

The suit also includes claims for general damages, interest and legal costs.

M. Nasir and Luncai Emas are further seeking RM3 million in exemplary damages and RM2 million in aggravated damages, bringing the total claim to more than RM5 million.

The case is expected to draw significant attention given M. Nasir’s status as one of Malaysia’s most influential and respected music icons.

Further proceedings are expected as the matter moves through the High Court.
