Namewee Seeks Review Of Drug Charges At Magistrate’s Court

Date:

Rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, appeared at the magistrate’s court today to file a representation seeking a review of two charges involving possession of prohibited substances.

The 43-year-old arrived at the court complex at about 9.05am, dressed in a black shirt and grey beanie, as proceedings related to his ongoing drug-related case continued.

On January 19, Wee was charged with allegedly possessing 1.57 grammes of methamphetamine in a hotel room along Jalan Conlay on October 22 last year. The charge falls under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.

In a separate charge, he is also accused of possessing 0.78 grammes of sildenafil at the same time and location. This offence, under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

Wee had previously pleaded not guilty to both charges as legal proceedings continue. The case remains ongoing as the court considers the representation submitted by the defence.

Earlier, on December 22 last year, Magistrate S. Arunjothy acquitted and discharged Wee of a separate charge involving self-administration of drugs after the prosecution withdrew the case following negative pathology results.
