Taylor Swift has made history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history after taking home the inaugural Artist Director Honors.
The pop superstar had previously been tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMAs. Her latest award pushed her total ahead, recognising artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling.
Accepting the honour on Sunday night, Swift reflected on her two-decade involvement in music videos. She said she had been involved in producing around 60 music videos, including 18 that she wrote and directed.
“I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago,” she said, while thanking fans for making the experience enjoyable.
Swift also won the night’s biggest prize, Video Of The Year, for “The Fate Of Ophelia”, taken from her album The Life Of A Showgirl.
She dedicated the award to the late Dolly Parton, describing the country music icon as the “ultimate showgirl”.
“I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,” Swift said.
Swift also used the ceremony to debut the music video for her new song “Patient Zero”, which she directed. The video stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, with Johnson and Swift portraying mirror images of each other.
The song is Swift’s first single since she married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July.
The two-hour ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS, with Snoop Dogg serving as host.
Madonna opened the show alongside Sabrina Carpenter with her 2026 single “Bring Your Love” and later won Artist Of The Year and Best Dance. She also took home Best Collaboration with Carpenter for their song.
Other performances throughout the night included LISA, Raye, Bruno Mars, Shaboozey and Gunna, while Kacey Musgraves performed a tribute to Dolly Parton with a rendition of “I Will Always Love You.”
The ceremony also honoured Nirvana with the 2026 Video Vanguard Award. Surviving members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear accepted the award, with frontman Kurt Cobain having died in 1994.
Novoselic paid tribute to Cobain and reflected on the band’s enduring influence, saying Nirvana never expected its music and visual style to resonate with so many people.
The 2026 VMAs also featured a tribute to George Michael, who died 10 years ago, as well as performances from several emerging and established artists.
