2026 Sarawak Budget: RM400 Raise for Village Chiefs to Recognize Growing Responsibilities

Date:

The Sarawak government will raise the monthly allowance for community leaders and village heads (KMKK) by RM400, effective January 1, 2026.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the adjustment will benefit over 7,700 KMKK, including temenggung, pemanca, penghulu, and other village and community leaders who play a vital role as intermediaries between the government and the people.

He noted that these leaders are also responsible for maintaining social harmony, resolving local disputes, and supporting government policy implementation.

“The last adjustment to their allowance was made in 2018, with an increase of RM100. Since then, the cost of living has continued to rise, and the scope of KMKK responsibilities has expanded significantly. Therefore, in recognition of their growing duties, I am announcing an increase of RM400 in the monthly allowance for KMKK, involving an additional allocation of RM37 million per year, effective January 1, 2026,” he said.

Abang Johari made the announcement while presenting the Sarawak Budget 2026 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session today.

In addition, he also announced a review of the incentive structure for 864 council members across 27 local authorities (PBT) in Sarawak.

The review, he said, comes in response to their increased responsibilities in strengthening the delivery of local services.

“The Special Fixed Monthly Allowance for all council members will be raised from RM300 to RM1,000. This adjustment will be implemented uniformly across all 27 PBTs,” he said.

Abang Johari added that council members will also receive an additional RM1,000 per year in medical benefits for basic treatment at government-recognized hospitals or private clinics.

“The new allowance and medical benefit structure involve an additional financial implication of RM8.1 million per year and will take effect on January 1, 2026,” he said.
