In Yizhu, Chiayi, a one-year-old boy suffered severe facial injuries after being attacked by a large black dog during a temple peace banquet on the evening of October 29. The toddler, the grandson of the temple chairman, was running around the event when the dog suddenly charged and bit his face. The boy’s parents immediately intervened, drove him to the hospital, where he required over 200 stitches. Due to his young age, he cannot receive the rabies vaccine, and he remains under observation, frequently crying in distress.
The toddler’s grandfather, who also serves as the temple chairman, described the terrifying moment: “The dog is dangerous; it had bitten people before and even chased motorcycles. My grandson walked by, and suddenly the dog knocked him down and bit him near the eyes. We don’t know if he will fully recover.”
The dog, named Hei Lun, belongs to a local family. Its owner expressed regret: “My mother brought the dog home to keep her company. It normally wouldn’t bite anyone. I don’t know why it happened that day, and I’m very sorry.”
Chiayi County authorities confirmed that because the dog entered a public area without supervision by someone over seven years old, it violated animal protection regulations and could result in a fine of up to NT$15,000. The dog, which had a microchip and was neutered, was confiscated by local authorities to prevent further attacks.
The family and local community remain shaken by the incident, highlighting concerns over animal control and child safety at public events.
