The remand period for the suspect detained over a stabbing incident at a school in Bandar Utama has been extended by another week.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, confirmed that the remand extension until next Tuesday was granted by the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court earlier today. He added that the police had applied for the extension as the previous remand period was set to expire today.
Shamsudin also revealed that the case papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor tomorrow for further instructions.
Earlier reports stated that a 16-year-old female student, Yap Shing Xuen, tragically died after being stabbed at her school in Bandar Utama last Tuesday. The suspect, a 14-year-old male schoolmate, was detained on the day of the incident. Authorities also seized two sharp weapons found with the suspect, believed to have been used in the attack.
At a press conference last Thursday, the victim’s mother, Wong Lee Ping, disclosed that her daughter had been stabbed approximately 200 times.
Yesterday, hundreds of family members and close friends attended a solemn farewell as the late Yap’s coffin was taken to the Nirvana Shah Alam crematorium. Prior to that, a memorial service was held at Nirvana Memorial Centre 2, where 100 blue and white balloons, Yap’s favourite colours, were released into the sky as a tribute and a symbol of blessings for the young girl.
